Boogie Nights

boogie nights

Technology is supposed to bring us together, but equally as often it drives us, generationally, apart. Let’s face it, most seniors are either I-challenged or technophobic. Continued technological development is occurring alongside the aging population and is becoming a more permanent part of our lives every day. Nonetheless, seniors often struggle with reduced reactivity, making it harder to keep up with fast-paced changes.

My husband and I both fall into this category. Our tech support is a 4-year-old with an 8 o’clock bedtime. My phone number is so recognizable to Apple Customer Support, that an in-store appointment is scheduled before I say hello. Sometimes we fail at technology so hilariously that I just can't resist sharing our mistakes with the "tech wise kids". During COVID, David and I have enjoyed nightly dinner and dancing together with music from his phone. The problem is neither of us know how to create a playlist. Recently during dinner with a young couple, Bing Crosby’s ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ came on. After quizzical glances, and a lot of laughs, the rest of the meal was spent discussing the benefits of Spotify. But David and I agree, we both prefer the spontaneity of the shuffle.

Tonight’s tunes?

  1. Martha Reeves & Vandellas – Jimmy Mack
  2. Clarence Carter - Patches
  3. Nat King Cole – The Christmas Song
  4. Barry White – What Am I Gonna Do with You
  5. Mary Chapin Carpenter – Come On
  6. Frank Sinatra – The Way You Look Tonight
  7. Barbara Lewis – Baby I’m Yours
  8. Frankie Vallie & 4 Seasons – Walk Like a Man
  9. The OJAY’s – Love Train
  10. Donna Summer – Last Dance

When it comes down to it, I wouldn’t upgrade any part of my life. Human contact is more important than any technological connection. And in the words of Gloria Gaynor (who we hear a lot), if all my electronics should die tonight, I will survive.
